Inside Scoop: FDNY Fire Zone

New York’s Bravest are so eager to educate people of all ages on the importance of fire safety. Rockefeller Center is home to the FDNY's hands-on state-of-the-art fire safety learning center that features exhibits, multimedia presentations, and awesome souvenirs of the New York Fire Department.

At the FDNY Fire Zone, guests meet official members of New York City’s Fire Department and learn all about the special equipment and gear they use daily to battle fires and rescue people from danger. Visitors can also take part in the action as they try on gear and climb aboard a real fire truck. At the Zone, they’ll also learn important, life-saving lessons and tricks of the trade.

There’s a simulated fire scene on the premises. Through real life testimonies, guests learn how easily fires can ignite and how quickly they can spread. They learn how to crawl through smoke-filled hallways, how to feel for hot doors, and how to identify hazards and create an escape plan. Fire-safety curricula and activity kits are available in eight languages, which include English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Urdu, and Yiddish.

Those who want to commemorate their authentic FDNY experience and take a slice of the Big Apple home can explore the FDNY Shop, which offers lots of gifts and gear—from apparel to toys, collectibles, and calendars.

Shop for a cause: proceeds benefit the FDNY Foundation—the official non-profit organization of the New York City Fire Department. There’s no admission fee to the shop.
