New York is known for great food and even greater restaurants. There are literally thousands upon thousands to choose from, specializing in everything from American (new and traditional) and Italian to Indian and steak houses to anything that falls in between. You can practically travel around the world without leaving the island of Manhattan. Here’s a sampling of some of our favorite places to nosh, whether it’s a weekend brunch, before a Broadway show, or the wee hours of the night.

Salute! has long been attracting a steady stream of clientele with its mix of sleek sophistication and Mediterranean cuisine, merging old-world tradition with contemporary flair. The menu features authentic homemade pastas, savory seafood, brick-oven pizzas, and healthy gourmet delights.
A “transcendent” dining experience awaits at Nirvana, home to classic and creative Indian dishes served in a modern setting. In addition to excellent vindaloos, tandoori entrées, and slow-cooked vegetable items, recommended meals include the crab shish kebab and Nirvana rabbit fiesta.
Located near the Theatre District, Simply Pasta is popular among New Yorkers and tourists alike with an innovative and traditional Northern Italian menu featuring delicious, fresh seafood, meat, and vegetable pastas, grilled fish, salads, pizzas, homemade desserts, and a wide-ranging wine list. With friendly, attentive service and a pleasant atmosphere, it is, as they are wont to say, “a nice place to mangia.”
Dine among the stars and immerse yourself in Hollywood history at Times Square’s Planet Hollywood. Be sure to stroll around the restaurant and check out the massive movie memorabilia collection before diving into a menu with an eclectic mix of favorites, including pastas, salads, sandwiches, and award-winning burgers.
Patsy’s is more than a restaurant -- it’s a warm, welcoming, convivial, white-tablecloth spot with a long, familiar menu of traditional Italian dishes. Plus, celebrities, theatergoers, couples, and large Italian families fill the tables, the pasta is homemade, the spiffy waiters wear sharp formal jackets with gold epaulets, and the soft, soothing food tastes as though an Italian mama cooked it.
Bill’s Gay Nineties offers a restaurant experience from another era -- it originally opened as a speakeasy during Prohibition in a brownstone built during the 1860s. The decor features stained glass, chandeliers, turn-of-the-20th-century theatre posters, playbills, and portraits of prizefighters and racehorses. The menu offers hearty fare including seafood and excellent steaks.
As the chef at Bice restaurants around the world, Jose Liriano has been inspired by local flavors that have blended themselves into his repertoire. With a classic yet comfortable feel, Bistro Milano offers a casual menu brought to life by Chef Liriano’s passion. The menu is extensive, featuring entrées from aged Angus beef hamburgers and homemade pizzas to slow-braised, buttery osso bucco with golden saffron-infused risotto. His homemade pastas are among the best in the world.
Stop into Heartland Brewery and you’ll see that it isn’t just beer that’s brewing at New York’s first American-style brewpub. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place to kick back and relax, and the five locations make it easy to escape the rush of the city. Sample one of the many unique brewed beers, try a tasty martini, or have one of the appetizers, like the mini bison burgers.
Sexy and sophisticated, the pan-Latin restaurant Agua Dulce is perfect for lunch, dinner, brunch, or a late-night meal. Menu highlights include organic salmon citrus ceviche, skirt steak, grilled chicken with saffron scented Valencia rice and chorizo, smoked tea braised short rib, and yellowfin tuna with minted lychee salsita.
