Hocico - Saint Vitus Bar
May 19, 2019 - Brooklyn

The Mexican group Hocico was officially formed in 1993 by Erk Aicrag (lyrics & vocals) and Racso Agroyam (synthesizer, programming). The names are ananyms of the real names Erik Garcia and Oscar Mayorga. Both cousins had been experimenting with electronic music, mixing Industrial and EBM, since they were fifteen years old and formed a band in 1992 called Hocico de Perro. The first live gig of Hocico was on February 18, 1994. Their music can be described as dark and aggressive electro-industrial. Their lyrics are mostly English although some songs are in Spanish. The Spanish word 'hocico' means snout and is a derogatory term that indicates ugliness (i.e., ugly as a dog's snout).

Kids Eat History: The Story of School Lunch - Henry Street Settlement
May 19, 2019 - New York

The Museum at Eldridge Street is heading offsite to the Henry Street Settlement for some food fun for the family! Bring your appetite to this interactive program that explores the history of school lunches in New York City public schools and its impact on the kids of the Lower East Side – at the very place where it all began, the Henry Street Settlement. At the turn of the 20th century, Henry Street’s Lillian Wald was one of the most vocal advocates of feeding the city’s poor immigrant children a nutritious lunch at school. Like other Progressive Era activists, she believed children would learn better if they weren’t hungry. It sounds elementary today, but in Wald’s time, it was a radical idea. And what might seem radical to us today are the foods on those early school lunch menus! (Boiled peas in a cone, anyone?) Picky eaters, prepare, because you’ll have a chance to taste some of those early school lunch menus. Recommended for kids five and up and their adult companions. For tickets, please call 212-219-0302 or visit kidseat.eventbrite.com

MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG: THE CENTENNIAL - Stephen Wise Free Synagogue
May 19, 2019 - New York

MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG (1919-1996) was one of the most prolific composers in history who's Holocaust-related opera "The Passenger" was the centerpiece of a 2014 Lincoln Center Festival, and who's worldwide recognition is about to reach a long awaited peak. Learn more at www.mweinberg.info Program 24 Cello Preludes, opus 100 (1969) Performed by noted Latvian-born cellist, prizewinner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, recipient of a 1990 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and first to record composer's entire legacy for unaccompanied cello, YOSIF FEIGELSON. Preludes are resembling a series of very vivid paintings, contain many different styles of writing, elements of Slavic, Jewish, and other ethnic music. As such, this work has an intricate connection to and will be juxtaposed with the famed Pictures at an Exhibition by MODEST MUSSORGSKY (1839 -1881) performed by the brilliant world-class pianist, ILYA YAKUSHEV. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie / Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie - MoMA
May 19, 2019 - New York

"Luis Buñuel's 1972 comic masterpiece, about three well-to-do couples who try and fail to have a meal together, is perhaps the most perfectly achieved and executed of all his late French films. The film proceeds by diverse interruptions, digressions, and interpolations (including dreams and tales within tales) that, interestingly enough, identify the characters, their class, and their seeming indestructibility with narrative itself. One of the things that makes this film as charming as it is, despite its radicalism, and helped Buñuel win his only Oscar is the perfect cast, many of whom bring along nearly mythic associations acquired in previous French films. Frightening, funny, profound, and mysterious" (Jonathan Rosenbaum).

The Phantom of Liberty / Le fantôme de la liberté - MoMA
May 19, 2019 - New York

Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière's absurdist parables, paradoxes, and comic inversions come fast and furious in The Phantom of Liberty: the tableau vivant of Goya's revolutionary painting The Third of May 1808, which proclaimed a modern age of resistance and terror; the little girl who hides in plain sight; the society dinner table as public toilet; the pornographic postcards of famous European monuments. In this runic and anarchical fever dream, unlike any since Buñuel's own surrealist 1930 masterpiece L'Age d'or, the film's all-star cast of Monica Vitti, Michel Piccoli, Jean-Claude Brialy, and company find themselves prisoners of their own making.

That Obscure Object of Desire / Cet obscur objet du désir - MoMA
May 19, 2019 - New York

Buñuel's last film goes up in flames, literally, in a destructive (or procreative?) act of terrorism, the climax of rich widower Fernando Rey's exquisitely tortured pursuit of the devilishly elusive "Concha" (played, alternately, by Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina).

What do you get when you combine a corrupt gynecologist, plastic surgery look-a-likes, a lascivious surgeon, a jittery liberal engaged to a staunch conservative, a flighty receptionist, a mysterious man hired for his sexual dexterity and a forgetful Holocaust survivor? Karen Lynn Gorney, star of the movie “Saturday Night Fever” and “All My Children” joins the cast as Eyphah along with Peter Zachari, Lori Funk, Joey Mirabile, Nora Falk, Scott Ahearn, Amandina Altomare and Brian Anthony Simmons. Four years ago playwright Peter Zachari mounted the first version of this play, which was titled, Under the Knife. “When I originally presented this show we set the farce in modern day but it always felt like it could work in a different time period,” says Zachari. “Dr. Katz is a disgraceful gynecologist who will do anything for a buck so I thought, ‘What if we set it in 1973 when the abortion debate was swirling and the play opens on the day of the Roe v. Wade announcement?’ Now Katz has been secretly and illegally performing abortions for cash under the table and is dreading the Supreme Court d... (read more)

Nikolett Pankovits Sextet & the River Voices - Carnegie Hall
May 20, 2019 - New York

Jazz singer Nikolett Pankovits and a brilliant cast of vocalists & instrumentalists re-imagine the haunting melodies of Hungarian folk music with a luscious array of jazz and Latin American rhythms. The project builds upon the field research of legendary Hungarian composers such as Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, confounding stylistic expectations and melding disparate musical worlds. For Pankovits, the New York scene provided an ideal forum for melding the music of her youth with her love of jazz and kindred musical currents. Working closely with longtime collaborator Juancho Herrera, a New York string wizard and arranger from Colombia, she’s designed the Zankel Hall concert as a barrier-breaking event for both Hungarian music lovers and music fans drawn to creatively charged cross-cultural collaborations. The concert grew out of Pankovits’ hit production featuring Latin jazz-inflected arrangements of traditional Hungarian songs Sad But True, which she performed to sold-out audiences in New York at venues such as the Blue Note, Joe’s Pub, the Bitter End, Club Bonafide, Rockwood Music Hall, and Lincoln Center. Pankovits performs with both her jazz group and The River Voice... (read more)

Diary of a Chambermaid / Le journal d'une femme de chambre - MoMA
May 21, 2019 - New York

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather: In Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière's sadomasochistic updating of Octave Mirbeau's Dreyfusard novel of 1900, a perfectly cast Jeanne Moreau is Celestine, the refined Parisian chambermaid who slowly lays bare the toxic underbelly of a fading aristocratic family in the provinces between the wars, humoring the lady of the manor in her cold ministrations over staff and house; the lady's dirty old father in his predations of animal and maidservant; and the estate's gardener-coachman in his fascist enthusiasms for God, country, and (she grimly suspects) a little girl's innocence.

Belle de jour - MoMA
May 21, 2019 - New York

In Belle de jour, Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière's mystery box of dreams within flashbacks within fantasies, Catherine Deneuve embodies the Surrealist ideal of femininity as at once virginal and vampirical—bored housewife by night, whore by day—martyring herself to male desire, to painful guilty pleasures of the flesh, to achieve her own desire. "[S]omehow, letting the color in—and this is Buñuel's first color film—has changed the emotional quality of his obsessions in a completely unpredictable way…. The movie ends with a dark ambiguity to what has gone on before, but every detail has been carefully thought out that seeing it again is like seeing it in another key" (Renata Adler).

The Phantom of Liberty / Le fantôme de la liberté - MoMA
May 23, 2019 - New York

In this runic and anarchical fever dream, unlike any since Buñuel's own surrealist 1930 masterpiece L'Age d'or, the film's all-star cast of Monica Vitti, Michel Piccoli, Jean-Claude Brialy, and company find themselves prisoners of their own making.

Valmont - MoMA
May 24, 2019 - New York

Though Dangerous Liaisons fared better at the box office and during awards season, Valmont was the less misanthropic—and in some ways more modern—of the two rival adaptations of Choderlos de Laclos's scandalous 18th-century epistolary novel. Miloš Forman and Jean-Claude Carrière found the pathos that underlay the novel's libertine decadence, its cruel twists of sexual intrigue and false moral posturing, and captured what André Malraux famously described as Laclos's "eroticization of the human will."

Danton - MoMA
May 24, 2019 - New York

Andrzej Wajda and Jean-Claude Carrière's daring, and dashing, history of the Reign of Terror in revolutionary France pits Robespierre, the ruthless Jacobin, and Danton, the self-appointed populist, in an ideological clash between two forms of despotism: tyranny of the one, and of the many. The film's contemporary relevance in 1983 did not go unnoticed, provoking cries of heresy among the embattled socialist left in France, and cries of heroic resistance within Poland's Solidarity movement during martial law.

Harlem Jazz Series - Sam Newsome - Greater Calvary Baptist Church
May 24, 2019 - New York

New York-based saxophonist and composer Sam Newsome works primarily in the medium of solo saxophone, an approach for which he gained world-wide critical acclaim. Many of the notes and sounds that comprise his compositions and improvisations are derived from his own personal sound palette of extended techniques. Newsome sees himself more along the lines of a visual artist who paints with notes and sounds rather than shapes and colors. "My music, "says Newsome, is a type of improvisatory art music in which jazz functions more as a resource than a musical genre to be interpreted with stylistic specificity. As a performer, Newsome often performs solo saxophone concerts around New York and across the country as well as leading his own trio with bassist Hilliard Greene and drummer Reggie Nicholson. He is a frequent collaborator with Andrew Cyrille, Fay Victor, Jean-Michel Pilc, David Liebman, and pianist Ethan Iverson. Newsome is also an associate professor of music at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University, where he is the music program coordinator, and teaches courses in jazz improvisation, music theory, and directs the University's jazz ensemble. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie / Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie - MoMA
May 25, 2019 - New York

Second Stage Theater - The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts
Through May 25, 2019 - New York

Come celebrate the decades of plays and musicals that have defined Second Stage as the home for living American playwrights. In 1979, a new theater was born with a novel idea: give a second chance to American plays that are worthy of a second look. Second Stage Theater started in a cramped 100-seat space on the 16th floor of a hotel on the Upper West Side. That first production was far from an easy or auspicious launch – the director and three actors quit, one at the very last minute (luckily, a young actor named Jeff Daniels agreed to step in and perform).

"Phantasies" provides a complex, non-linear, excavation of the potential that lies embedded within every living being. With "Phantasies", Madan teams up with world-renowned designer Agyesh Madan (founder of neo-luxury brand Stòffa), and long-time collaborator Stephanie Saywell. “The play of children is determined by their wishes – really by the child’s ONE wish, which is to be grown-up... HSA Department Of Art & Design Presents INTERWOVEN - HSA Gallery
Through May 25, 2019 - New York

The Harlem School of the Arts with curator and Director of Art & Design, Adrienne Elise Tarver, proudly presents, “INTERWOVEN,” an exhibition featuring the work of artists Sedrick and Letitia Huckaby. This unique exhibition presents married couple, Sedrick and Letitia Huckaby’s work side-by-side highlighting their individual and mutual interests in the ties that bind generations in the black community. Textiles play a large role in these recent bodies of work, as they have in the histories of the black community in America. From the cotton picked in southern plantations to the intricate patchwork quilts made from scraps of old clothes, there’s resilience and resourcefulness that is woven into the threads of black history in the United States. Letitia presents work from her series “40 Acres...Gumbo Ya Ya,” referencing the unfulfilled promise of land to formerly enslaved individuals in post-civil-war America, and the Cajun phrase meaning everybody is talking at once. She stretches images of rural Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas printed on fabric over embroidery hoops, referencing domestic work and handmaid heirlooms which cultivate sentimental value over generations instead ... Danton - MoMA
May 26, 2019 - New York

Andrzej Wajda and Jean-Claude Carrière's daring, and dashing, history of the Reign of Terror in revolutionary France pits Robespierre, the ruthless Jacobin, and Danton, the self-appointed populist, in an ideological clash between two forms of despotism: tyranny of the one, and of the many. The film's contemporary relevance in 1983 did not go unnoticed, provoking cries of heresy among the embattled socialist left in France, and cries of heroic resistance within Poland's Solidarity movement during martial law.

SMILE! – Music by Marvin Hamlisch & Lyrics by Howard Ashman - Connelly Theater
Through May 26, 2019 - New York

Teen performers 13-18 working in theater or pursuing careers in musical theater. They come from Broadway, Hollywood, West End, LaGuardia, Performing Arts High School...(Ben Platt was a member of KT before "Dear Evan Hansen"). SMILE! which features music by Marvin Hamlisch and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, is "a satirical portrait that follows the intrigue and exploits onstage and behind-the-scenes as Santa Rosa, California plays host to the Young American Miss Pageant." Songs from the Hamlisch-Ashman score include “Disneyland," "Smile," "In Our Hands," "Very Best Week of Your Lives" and "Dear Mom." Smile is rarely performed. It opened Nov. 24, 1986, at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. It played 48 performances. Marvin Hamlisch was so devastated, the show was never performed again until after his passing. From the NYTimes review in 1986: The endearing passion to be found in ''Smile,'' has little to do with beauty pageants, nubile teen-age girls, corrupted American values or any other subject that the show keeps claiming to be about. What clearly drives Howard Ashman, the author of the book and lyrics, and Marvin Hamlisch, the composer, is their deep affection ... (read more)

Hiroshi Wada: The First New York Solo Exhibition - Agora Gallery
Through May 31, 2019 - NYC

Japanese artist Hiroshi Wada is a calligraphy painter. Wada studied the ancient tradition of “shodo”—brush and ink drawing on rice paper— with a great master of this art form. While his art retains the spontaneity and playfulness of a child’s drawing, in fact it takes years of apprenticeship to achieve their effortless look. Wada’s aim, however, is not the traditional “sho.” The artist believes in the importance of modernizing this conventional practice. He aspires to create calligraphy that is modern, even avant-garde, yet still rooted in tradition. When he writes characters, he forgets what he has learned and starts with a “clean slate”, drawing like a child. For Wada, calligraphy is a way to bring joy and playfulness to others. Wada believes that while life’s hurdles may range from personal failures to cataclysmic disasters, art has the capacity to empower, heal, and create peace. Wada’s background as a track-and-field athlete reflects in the explosive energy and near-physical intensity to his gestural compositions. Hiroshi Wada: The First New York Solo Exhibition opens at May 11, 2019 and will be on display until May 31, 2019, with an opening reception on Thursday, May 1... (read more)

The artists involved provided a distinctively European parallel to the American Abstract Expressionist movement. This exhibition will offer an insight into the allure of Paris in the 1950s and '60s: a hub of cross-cultural exchange, intellectual activity, and artistic re-invention. It will feature works by artists Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Jean Paul Riopelle, Pierre Soulages, and Zao Wou-Ki.

#StarringJohnCho Exhibition - Pearl River Mart Gallery
Through July 08, 2019 - New York

It’s not just a hashtag — it’s a cultural movement. Screenwriter, creative strategist, and cultural activist William Yu started the viral #StarringJohnCho project to address the lack of Asian American representation in Hollywood and to bring to life the idea of an Asian American leading actor. Now the hashtag is brought to life in a multimedia installation. Reminiscent of a movie theater lobby, the installation invites viewers to the imagined world of John Cho as a lead actor, and makes tangible the possibilities for a new kind of movie going experience for Asian Americans. See in person what movies like The Avengers, Jurassic World, and (500) Days of Summer would look like with an Asian American star. And, become a superhero yourself with the show's interactive portion! Join us in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month for the opening reception: May 18, 5 to 7pm. Free and open to the public.

Among Others: Photography and the Group - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through August 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Composed chiefly of works in the Morgan's collection, this exhibition explores how photographers have represented the bonds uniting people, whether in group portraits or in serial imagery. In arranged sittings, form is content: when commissioned to photograph the royals of Germany and England at a wedding in 1894, James Russell and Son's Studio instinctively centered its composition around the family's matriarch, Queen Victoria. Camera artists sometimes insert themselves into the action, as Susan Meiselas did when mingling with carnival strippers, first to portray them behind the scenes and then to photograph those in the audience from a performer's perspective. Action can also be a pose: in 1970, when asked to create a positive poster image for the Gay Liberation Front, Peter Hujar asked the group's members to run toward him on the street, enacting their slogan, "Come Out!!" Ingenuity may be called for when one's subjects are all too well-known: a press photographer, Jean-Pierre Ducatez, appealed to the primal desires of Beatles fans by zeroing in on the lips of each band member, creating a captivating game of who's-who. Bringing together works from the 1860s to the present, Among... (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 - Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals. The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

E. v. Day: Breaking the Glass Ceiling - Children's Museum of the Arts
Through October 27, 2019 - New York

Known for her gravity-defying suspension sculptures that explore themes of science fiction, space, gender, and humor, E. V. Day illuminates contradictions in gender roles and stretches the confines of social stereotypes. In her new site-specific installation in the central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery, E. V. Day will use turnbuckles, monofilament, and angle iron to build multiple suspended trajectories in the ceiling, using the columns and walls as mounting points. Day will employ chains, brass rods, elastic cords, and hardware to build tension, highlight resistance, and imply velocity. The ceiling installation will be complemented by shattered glass images displayed around the perimeter of the gallery referencing cosmic aspirations — the strong desire to achieve something that might feel just outside of one's reach.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

The heavy themes of mental illness, suicide, and struggling families are confronting, but as they become more prominent in real life, the need to portray these issue seriously in theatre is more crucial than ever. Dear Evan Hansen handles these themes with grace and honesty. It makes a point of giv... (read more)

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet.
