NYC Dining - Sample Cuisines from Around the World

New York City is the crossroads of the world, and representative of the cultural diversity in the city is the many varieties of cuisine available to visitors and locals alike. From twists on American cuisine to tandoori, the city’s restaurants offer the best food from all over the globe. Sampling these offerings is an experience in and of itself, and we recommend you spend some of your time in the city visiting these highly diverse -- and excellent -- restaurants.

After exploring the downtown hotspots or a long day at the office, TriBeCa’s Ivy’s Bistro is the perfect neighborhood spot to watch the sun set over the Hudson River (outdoor seating is available during the spring and summer). While taking in the atmosphere, enjoy a glass of wine and tasty meal from their diverse menu of American cuisine; best known for their baked turkey burgers, macaroni & cheese croquettes and garlic bread with warm pesto sauce, there’s no way you’ll leave hungry.

The sprawling Trattoria Dopo Teatro just east of Times Square is a big and bustling spot whose modest storefront gives no hint of the handsome multi-leveled restaurant within. The sizable menu offers a combination of Italian golden oldies -- lasagna, spaghetti, scaloppini, ravioli, and risotto -- and more creative modern dishes, like the salmon-and-ricotta-cheese-filled crepes, the Panzanella, Teatro’s signature open ravioli, or the pastiera Napoletana, a traditional Naples grain-ricotta pie. A voluminous Italian-dominated wine list meshes well with the menu.

Most of the dishes at Breeze combine Thai food with French cooking techniques, but the flavors lean more to Thai than French. Our favorite entrées include duck breast pan-seared with ginger, tamarind, garlic, and Chinese broccoli, fanned out on a plate and accompanied by butternut squash dumplings, and Hot Ocean, a seafood-and-vegetable casserole, with sautéed shrimp, squid, and scallops in a lemongrass-driven sauce. Be sure to check out their affordable lunch and dinner pre-fixe menus.

The cozy, bi-level restaurant and lounge Darbar is a superb choice for Indian food with great ambience and service. A lavish $11.95 lunch buffet with new and delicious dishes every day is served 11:30am-4pm, and they offer dinner from $10 & up from 4pm-10:30pm. Darbar also has a sister restaurant featuring fine Indian dining in an elegant setting: Darbar Grill. For lunch and dinner they offer a selection of seafood, chicken, goat and vegetarian entrées, and their very popular lunch buffet is available seven days week a from 11:30am to 4pm. Reviewers and patrons alike have raved about the excellent food available at both restaurants.

Located on the ground floor of the New York Times Building, Inakaya is the first New York City outpost of the renowned 39-year-old eatery in Roppongi, Tokyo. A traditional robatayaki restaurant, Inakaya features Japanese barbecue cooked right in front of you by chefs that shuttle the dishes at you via long wooden paddles. Everything is larger than life and theatrical, from the shouts that greet you when you enter to the enormous dining bar to the elaborate costumes worn by the waiters. Definitely a dining experience you won’t forget.

Satisfy your hankerings for delicious Mexican food in Cancun’s festive, homey atmosphere. It’s a place of archways, clay pots, urns, South of the Border lanterns, wall masks, mustard-colored walls, statues, candles and laughter. Noteworthy drinks served in glasses with cactus-shaped stems are the order of the day: the mojitos and especially margaritas are among the city’s best. Enjoy a mix of authentic favorites -- such as enchiladas and sizzling fajitas -- or try one of their seafood specialties, such as the Red Snapper Cancun.

Located near the Empire State Building and Macy’s, Ishihama has some of the city’s best sushi, and the menu is packed with a variety of Japanese and Korean dishes. There’s also a wide selection of non-sushi dishes and plum, rice, red and white wines.
