With the fabled aircraft carrier Intrepid in dry dock and its museum undergoing a restoration and refurbishment until the fall of 2008, Fleet Week in New York City is going to be a little different this year.
Every year, during the week that leads up to Memorial Day, thousands of Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and international navy ships arrive in the city and more than a dozen Navy and Coast Guard ships visit New York Harbor. It’s an incredible opportunity to witness first-hand the latest capabilities of today’s Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Team.
In anticipation of Fleet Week, NY Water Taxi has been working with the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy to put together a great tour of New York Harbor and New York City’s military history.
The Key to the Continent: Defending New York Harbor begins at lower Manhattan’s Castle Clinton in Battery Park, a visitors’ center with a history of almost two centuries, including stints as a fortress, immigration center, and aquarium. The tour covers New York City’s early history as a British colony to the Revolutionary War and non-combat activity during World War II.
NY Water Taxi also offers a variety of other services. With 11 stops, the $25 2-day hop-on/hop-off pass is a great way to get around and see different parts of the city. Three different harbor tours include: the Statue of Liberty & Downtown Express Tour, a one-hour jaunt led by native New Yorker Bobby Boroughs that takes you up-close to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island; the Gateway to America tour covers 400 years of history narrated by Kathleen Turner, David Rockefeller Jr., and National Park Service rangers; and this summer’s Audubon EcoCruises (6/2-8/12) provides spectacular views of the skyline and some of our lesser-known aviary residents.
