Adam Ezra Group at The Loft - City Winery
July 14, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $20 Day of Show It's difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin' essence of the Adam Ezra Group into a single word, but frontman Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: community. Community is epitomized by a belief that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world. A tireless touring outfit, the Adam Ezra Group (AEG) is constantly on the road, often devoting their time to local charities and always going out of their way to connect with fans. July 15, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $25 Day of Show Juwan Crawley is a singer, actor and writer who hails from Connecticut. In 2016, he moved to New York City to pursue his career as an artist. Born in 1994, this double Scorpio with a Gemini Moon grew up in a religious family; and the Gospel Churches he attended had a huge influence on his life. It also had a great impact on his music. His cool Aunts and Godmother introduced him to Old School R&B and Jazz as well as poetry. At the age of 9, Juwan sang on his grandmother's gospel album which prompted his mother to provide him with voice lessons; exposing him to the world of classical music and musical theater. Realizing at an early age that he was gay, growing up in a religious environment was never easy; but it proved to be the soil in which his soul would blossom. As a black man living in pre-Obama and post-Obama America, Juwan has been presented with a host of realities, both amazing and horrifying. It is here, in the joy and the pain of self-discovery, where his music began. Now finding his muses, they bring him inspiration. You just can't go through life and experience it fully with a set of blinders on. I think there's tremendous beauty in a cross-pollination of music and influences." In many ways, weaving together divergent impulses is at the heart of Carter's music. Like the late tenor sax titan Ben Webster, he's given to furious, high-velocity solos, but is just as likely to wax sentimental, using his big, bruising tone to tenderly caress a comely melody. In 2000, he released two albums simultaneously that amounted to an anti-manifesto, a proclamation that everything is fair game.

James Carter - Blue Note
Through July 17, 2019 - New York

You have to be totally comfortable wherever," Carter says. "I feel that music equals life, that's the way my teacher always taught me. You just can't go through life and experience it fully with a set of blinders on. I think there's tremendous beauty in cross-pollinations of music and influences." In many ways, weaving together divergent impulses is at the heart of Carter's music. On Chasin' the Gypsy, a voluptuous, lyrical session partly inspired by the timeless collaboration between Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, he assembled a thrilling group with violinist Regina Carter and Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, for a project born out of some sound check jamming with Lubambo and Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista during a tour with Kathleen Battle. The groove-laden Layin' in the Cut, featuring James Blood Ulmer's former rhythm section with electric... (read more)

Life Cycles: Blade, Boccato, Cowherd, Croft, Hart, Walden & Weiss - Blue Note
July 18, 2019 - New York

Writing in The New York Times (4.23.2015), Nate Chinen called Brian Blade "one of the most unaffectedly charismatic musicians in jazz." We couldn't agree more, and now the Jazz Standard is proud to present this gifted drummer's latest project, Life Cycles. Along with such longtime members of the Brian Blade Fellowship as pianist Jon Cowherd and saxophonist Myron Walden, the new aggregation includes vocalist/vibraphonist Monte Croft; he first recorded as a leader circa 1989 (two albums on Columbia) and went on to work with the groups of Branford Marsalis and James Spaulding, in addition to his own outfits. As for Shreveport, Louisiana native Brian Blade, from 1988 through 1993 he studied and played with many of the New Orleans masters, including Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Germaine Bazzle, and Alvin "Red" Tyler. A member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet since 2000, Brian Blade also has worked with Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, and Bob Dylan. "[His] rich tapestry of cymbal variations, swelling snare–rolls and asymmetrical accents, coupled with an unfaltering heartbeat of a pulse, marks out an unusually emotional drummer."

Upstate w/ The Chordaes & Handsome Hound at The Loft - City Winery
July 18, 2019 - New York

Tickets will be $20 Day of Show For Upstate, the last few years have been a time of profound exploration and self-discovery. As the band knocked off milestone after milestone on the road, their sound, their lineup, and even their name all underwent dramatic metamorphoses. Challenging and thrilling all at once, those changes have finally culminated in the band's dazzling new album, a collection that showcases both their remarkable growth and their adventurous blend of folk, R&B, jazz, gospel, and rock and roll. Recorded primarily over six days at the Clubhouse studio in Rhinebeck, NY, 'Healing' is Upstate's first release with new member Allison Olender, their first with four contributing songwriters, and their first since shortening their name from Upstate Rubdown. It's also their first project to be produced by Wood Brothers percussionist Jano Rix, who helped the group embrace their transformation and lean in to their unique lineup without sacrificing any of the gorgeous harmonies, eclectic arrangements, and unforgettable performances that have defined the band since their earliest days. Y La Bamba - Le Poisson Rouge
July 18, 2019 - New York

18+ Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza's inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band's affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR's Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza's artistic voice like never before. "Soy como soy," Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba's most unbridled offering yet.

THE WHITE DRESS by Roger Q. Mason - Access Theater
Through July 20, 2019 - New York

A Coming-of-Age-Play for the They/Them Generation written by queer black/filipinx playwright Roger Q. Mason. Meet the Howard family: Theo is a busy black attorney; Hazel is his dutiful Filipina wife; and their son is bright, promising Jonathan. No, fuck that - here’s the Howard family: Theo has been pushed in the closet; Hazel’s Tiger mom tactics have kept him there; and all Jonathan wants to do is kiss Winnie, wear femme clothes, and love themself. Part religious rite, part dance/performance, THE WHITE DRESS is Jonathan Howard’s genderqueer coming-of-age journey through familial shaming, peer bullying, and unrequited love to redefine what male looks, sounds and feels like. Underscored live by Brooklyn-based DJ SunSon PDX and directed and choreographed by Adin Walker, THE WHITE DRESS features a music and movement score that accentuates Jonathan’s odyssey to be free in their own skin. This upcoming production comes after an acclaimed workshop production as part of the Araca Project, which was advocated for by influencers including Condola Rashad and Sara Ramirez. Playwright Roger Q. Mason’s lauded script has been named Finalist for The Lark Playwrights' Week and the ina... (read more)

Myron Walden - Blue Note
Through July 20, 2019 - New York

Myron Walden is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, lauded for the rich earnestness of his sound and clarity of tone and his distinctly impassioned stage presence. Myron, who first specialized on the alto saxophone and the rarely heard bass clarinet, has added the tenor saxophone to his musical arsenal. He is a leader of an expanding number of musical projects, reflecting the varied aspects of a growing musical identity. He is an in-demand sideman, a founding member of Brian Blade's Fellowship Band and a regular band member of the ensembles of such jazz legends as the late Ray Barretto and Freddie Hubbard. He is a prodigious composer working in a wide variety of styles and moods (his oft-recorded "Like a Flower Seeking the Sun" is but one example of an inventive spirit whose melodies have been recorded by the likes of Ravi Coltrane, Antoine Roney, Winard Harper, Vincent Herring, Carl Allen and Ray Barretto.) Yet if one aspect of Walden's kaleidoscopic musical identity could define him, it would be a driving, restless spirit – one that drives him to widen his experience, to dig deeper into himself, to challenge himself to find that certain truth that lies at the heart of any musical e... With these new paintings of scantily clad young girls posing with handheld devices, Feshina calls the viewer’s attention to the contrast between contemporary and historic portraiture poses, highlighting how restrictive codes of behavior change, migrate, and ultimately manifest themselves in visual culture.

A Christian Mcbride Situation - Blue Note
Through July 22, 2019 - New York

Six-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride's path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade's worth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians. He was finding his voice, and others were learning to listen for it.

A Look Back: 50 Years After Stonewall - Fort Gansevoort
Through August 10, 2019 -

A Look Back: 50 Years After Stonewall unites the work of queer artists living and producing in and around New York City beginning around the time of the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 and leading into the 1980s. This is only a portion of the story, an incomplete history, most especially given that the Gay Liberation movement and its coinciding contemporary art market had not placed transgender voices nor people of color at the forefront of the conversation. The exhibition includes both documentation of the Gay Liberation movement and a look back at the work made by LGBTQ+ artists during this time. Central to the work included are the subjects of protest, revolt, celebration, and love. Kate Millett's sculpture, American Flag Goes to Pot (1970) provides a blunt protest to government authority, while Joan E. Biren's photograph's document the tenderness of love between two women. The work made during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, beginning in 1981, becomes entangled in death and remembrance, an epidemic defining this decade most especially in the New York City queer community and resulting in a tremendous amount of loss. Peter Hujar, Paul Thek and David Wojnarowicz's work all refle... (read more)

Day illuminates contradictions in gender roles and stretches the confines of social stereotypes. In her new site-specific installation in the central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery, E. V. Day will use turnbuckles, monofilament, and angle iron to build multiple suspended trajectories in the ceiling, using the columns and walls as mounting points. Day will employ chains, brass rods, elastic cords, and hardware to build tension, highlight resistance, and imply velocity.
