These days, it’s hard to miss One Vanderbilt, the new 1,401-foot skyscraper currently under construction next to Grand Central Terminal. The building, which will house offices and an exciting new restaurant, is on track to open in 2020.

This skyline-altering structure will exceed the height of the Chrysler Building (which is 1,046 feet from base to antenna) and rise just a few feet shy of the Empire State Building (1,454 feet). One Vanderbilt will arrive amidst a bevy of other construction projects of similar scope, such as Tower Fifth, Central Park Tower, and 350 Park Avenue. Although One World Trade will keep its title as the tallest structure in the city, subsequent rankings will likely shift as other towers reach completion in coming years. 

One Vanderbilt’s design will also acknowledge the exquisite architecture of its neighbor, Grand Central, built in 1913 and designed by the architects at Warren and Wetmore. According to the New York Times, the architects at Kohn Pedersen Fox designed One Vanderbilt with large glass windows on every floor, set the building back slightly from the street, and will include a wide plaza between building and terminal so that those in and out of the office building can still admire the historic structure.

In addition to its abundant office space, One Vanderbilt will also feature a new fine dining restaurant from Daniel Boulud. The celebrated chef has received two Michelin stars for his restaurant Daniel, as well as wide acclaim for other concepts like Boulud Sud, DB Bistro Moderne, and Epicurie Boulud. According to the New York Post, Boulud’s 11,000-square-foot bar and restaurant at One Vanderbilt will be located on the second floor and offer over 100 seats to diners looking for an exceptional meal. A fourth location of Epicurie Boulud, the chef’s fast-casual gourmet eatery, is also planned for the ground floor of One Vanderbilt. 

One Vanderbilt will be located just steps away from commuters traveling through Grand Central Terminal. Travelers will also be able to access the Long Island Rail Road through One Vanderbilt, a phase of the project scheduled to open in 2022. The One Vanderbilt project is owned and managed by the firm SL Green. 

Once complete, One Vanderbilt will, like other great New York skyscrapers, taper to a point with an antenna and light up the sky every evening.
