What's good to do on a day in Harlem? The neighborhood is rich in history and offers so much to see. While the more popular neighborhoods that tourists like to check out aren't as far north in Manhattan don't disregard Harlem. Take the short subway ride uptown for some good soul food and activities that go beyond just the normal tourist spots.
1. Eat real soul food at Sylvia’s Restaurant
This restaurant was founded back in 1962 by “the Queen of Soul Food”, Sylvia Woods. If you’ve never had soul food, there is only one place you can go in New York City and that is to Sylvia’s.
2. Foodies beware—try out Taste Harlem Food and Cultural Tours
For you foodies, you probably have a list full of places you want to go for a meal once in New York City. And I’m not saying you shouldn’t go, but consider joining the Taste Harlem Food and Cultural Tours as well. Harlem is a neighborhood that represents many different cuisines, as you’ll learn to know through the tour. Mixing food and history? Sounds like a great day to me!
3. Try the PB burger at Harlem Public
Yes, you read that right. Not only is Harlem Public a great pub that offers great food in a better atmosphere than most pubs can brag about, but they also offer their visitors a food delight in the form of a peanut butter hamburger. For some, probably most, peanut butter sounds out of place on a burger. But, trust me. You will want to put peanut butter on your burger at home after giving this burger a try!
4. Have a beer and relax at Bier International
Visiting a beer garden is a great night activity when you’re visiting a new city, especially if you’re traveling in a big group! I personally love beer gardens. The food is great, the beer selection wide, and you’re pretty much spending time in a casual setting. Heading to Bier International is the perfect selection if you and your group are looking for a casual place to hang out after a long day of sightseeing.
5. A night at the Apollo
Last but not least, there’s always the Apollo Theater. If you do your own research on things to do in Harlem, a visit to Apollo Theater is sure to come up on most lists. And so it should. Apollo Theater is a Harlem landmark, a place where you know you’ll have a good time. If not even to go inside to view the entertainment, there is something special just viewing it from the outside as well
