Winging It: 5 Takes on Chicken Wings in NYC

Many foodies enjoy sampling a variety of chicken wing dishes. There are plenty of choices in New York City for chicken lovers to explore, from traditional dishes served with Buffalo sauce and blue cheese to more exotic Korean and Vietnamese versions.

The Flying Cock

Flying Cock Hot Wings

The Flying Cock in Murray Hill serves creative takes on traditional bar foods. Its Korean style wings are a perfect fusion of sweet, spicy, and tangy. They’re boiled in a proprietary vegetable stock, then refrigerated, fried to order, and tossed in a sauce made with Korean flavorful ingredients such as chili paste, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar. The dish is garnished with scallion, fried onions, and black and white sesame seeds. 497 Third Ave., 212-689-6900, theflyingcocknyc.com

PhoBar

Kick it up a notch at PhoBar. Chinatown’s contemporary Vietnamese restaurant offers zesty lemongrass wings, which are fried and coated with a Vietnamese chili sauce for a subtle dose of heat. 43 Mott St., 212-267-5400, phobar.com

The Tang

Coca Cola Chicken Wings The Tang

Coca-Cola Chicken Wings are a favorite of home cooks in China. Although this recipe is popular in China, it’s rarely offered on menus in America. The innovative dish represents how contemporary Chinese foodies indulge—they’re open to a variety of tastes rather than being bound by “authenticity.” The Tang’s intriguing chicken wings are braised in Coca-Cola and soy sauce, and then simmered into a caramelized and savory glaze. Pi xian, a broad bean paste, is added for extra Sichuan flavor. The Tang’s second location was recently unveiled on the Upper West Side (920 Amsterdam Ave., 646-596-7970). 120 First Ave., 646-678-3092, thetangnyc.com

Upright

A West Village fave, Upright (formally known as Upright Brewhouse), has revamped its food menu to include a lineup of elevated bar snacks. Among the newcomers is the Buffalo chicken wings dish, which is tossed in a spicy, house-made Buffalo sauce and served with a side of blue cheese for dipping. Carrots and celery are included. 547 Hudson St., 212-810-9944, uprightbrewhouse.com

Zusik

Zusik Chicken Wings

New to the West Village is Zusik—a mod restaurant that highlights traditional Korean dishes and fusion preparations influenced by the cuisines of France, Italy, and America. Executive Chef/Co-Owner Yurum Nam, who nabbed the Gold Award in hot dishes at the Seoul International Culinary Competition, drew inspiration from his homeland of South Korea. His fried Chicken Wings are buttermilk battered and feature pickled radish. The tasty wings are served with a spicy Korean-style sauce. Traditional plateware and wooden utensils elevate the experience. 202 W. 14th St., 646-370-5331, zusikny.com
