EARTH DAY 50 VIRTUAL KICK-OFF: Sunday, April 19, 2020
Due to the coronavirus, please call to ensure this event is still happening before you leave home.
Earth Day Initiative and March for Science NYC will host a virtual day of action for the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 19, 2020. The digital day of action will feature a livestream educating the public about climate science, its relationship to infectious diseases and public health, and ways to engage in advocacy on the local level. Link to come. The Earth Day 50 Virtual Kick-Off is a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent mitigation measures, including the New York City government banning mass gatherings of over 50 people for the foreseeable future. Originally, the groups had planned for a joint outdoor Earth Day 50 Kick-Off event featuring more than 100 non-profits and community organizations and hundreds of thousands of attendees, highlighting scientific and activist communities. Now, the events will be recreated online. The virtual event will be one of the first mass mobilizations to happen in the wake of the global pandemic. The virtual event will feature: 1. a full-day virtual stage of high-profile speakers, including public officials, activists, celebrities, performers, and scientists; 2. interactive presentations and workshops led by activists and scientists; and 3. virtual exhibitor booths featuring environmental campaigns and sustainable causes. Given these difficult circumstances, we are using this moment to demonstrate what we can do to empower one another and connect with people around the world to move things in a positive direction, even when circumstances on the ground make it difficult to be with each other in person. We are building out an online platform and livestream video experience that will recreate our in-person events in an online format. Just as we were planning to have at our in-person events on April 19 to kick off Earth Week.
We are going to use the technology and tools available to us to demonstrate what activism can look like in the 21st Century. You can get a head start by taking action now.
Show up for Earth Day 50, not in person, but as part of the global connected community of people who want a better future. Website: http://www.earthdayinitiative.org/ Contact information: Alexander Bryden; firstname.lastname@example.org; 908.400.7056
